BRIGHT BULB SCREENINGS, Free Double Features Every Second Thursday of the MonthFollow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, InstagramFIGHTING THE NAZIS DOUBLE-FEATURE! SEE! NAZIS CONFRONTED AND OVERCOME!Films to be screened:BLACK BOOK (2006, directed by Paul Verhoeven, 145 minutes, U.S.)LIFEBOAT (1944, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 97 minutes, U.S.)- - - - -In the mid-1980s, director Paul Verhoeven left the Netherlands to direct films in Hollywood, making a trail of audacious blockbusters, including ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL , BASIC INSTINCT, the notorious SHOWGIRLS and STARSHIP TROOPERS. BLACK BOOK marked his return to filmmaking his home country. Born in 1938, Verhoeven is old enough to remember the Nazi Occupation of Holland and worked for 15 years on the script that would be the WW2 epic BLACK BOOK.In BLACK BOOK Rachel is a Jewish singer who survives personal tragedy as the Nazis occupy Holland. After a failed attempt to escape the country, Rachel joins the Dutch resistance and transforming herself into “Eva” she'll sacrifice everything to bring down the Nazi regime from within.Again Verhoeven has constructed a grand scenario that can hold the weight of his outrageous brand of mayhem and melodrama, continually raising the stakes to dizzying heights as Eva ferrets out the Nazis vulnerabilities from right under their noses. At the time, BLACK BOOK cost three-times the biggest-budgeted Dutch film but would go on to be a financial success. In 2008, Dutch audiences picked BLACK BOOK as the greatest Dutch film ever made. Features an excellent score by Anne Dudley of the synth pop group Art of Noise.“Black Book doesn't let the grim facts of the Holocaust get in the way of some ripping pulp.“Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer- - - - -An British expatriate in Hollywood as WW2 raged in his home country, Alfred Hitchcock's wartime films exude a special emotional urgency. Today Hitchcock's 1944 film LIFEBOAT is mainly remembered for its claustrophobic setting, those tight borders being a theme Hitchcock would return to later in his films ROPE and REAR WINDOW. LIFEBOAT deserves a special spotlight today, with its conversation about fascism having its modern relevancies and its “man against nature” premise remaining timeless.Hitchcock developed the story with novelist John Steinbeck, spinning the tale of a lone lifeboat at sea in the aftermath of a skirmish between a U.S. merchant marine vessel and a German U-boat. Among the British and American passengers is a German seaman who slowly but surely takes command of the boat. Can the allies cease their bickering among themselves and stop this conniving Nazi?Reviewers at the time accused Hitchcock of being too generous to the German passenger, which today appears a reaction to the film creating a character who was more multi-dimensional than the typical wartime propaganda villain. The nine actors aboard this slippery rubber raft get plenty of moments to shine, from Tallulah Bankhead's seen-it-all photographer, William Bendix's working class everyman, Walter Sleazak as the smug Nazi and the great African American actor Canada Lee in a rare non-stereotypical black role of the era. The film's stark message and lack of sentimentality is underlined by Hitchcock's decision to forgo a soundtrack to augment the action. Filmmaking of the highest order from one of cinema's enduring masters.“Hitchcock’s shifting sympathies guarantee our guilty involvement with the characters...(he) never puts his audience at a distance, we’re always being confronted by ourselves and our attitudes”- Dan Callahan, SlantFollow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, Instagram

Fire Museum Presents: Yeison Landero If you’re talking about cumbia royalty, there is no higher court than that of Andrés Landero — long considered the king of cumbia across the world for his contributions to the tropical genre. Yeison, his grandson, caught his Andrés’ attention at the age of 7, when he displayed not just a raw talent for interpreting melodies, but also a pure love for the music — un corazón cumbiambero. Yeison grew up surrounded by music. In his early years, his home was visited by musicians of the highest stature: Alfredo Gutiérrez, Lizandro Meza, Calixto Ochoa, Enríquez Díaz, Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto… innumerable distinguished folk figures performed around his kitchen table. The first band he performed in was with Andrés Landero himself — he and his sister were introduced as “los nietos de Andrés Landero”, performing cumbia at festivals, concerts, and fairs across Colombia. Yeison has dedicated his life to the genre and the instrument of his family legacy, in the spirit of Andrés, and he is rightly called the heir to cumbia. He lights up every stage he plays on. Bowerbird welcomes back Laraaji, a key figure in the evolution of ambient music whose distinctive sound has been captivating listeners for decades. Philadelphia-born and New Jersey-raised, Laraaji has pursued spiritual transcendence through music since the mid-1970s. After years of developing an aesthetic shaped by Eastern philosophies and transcendental research in his longtime Harlem home, Laraaji’s breakthrough came when Brian Eno discovered him busking in Washington Square Park in 1979, improvising celestial meditations on his electric zither. This encounter led to a collaboration on Eno’s influential Ambient series, resulting in the 1980 album Day of Radiance. Since then, Laraaji has become a defining figure in new age and ambient music, known for his commitment to hand-crafted sounds over synthesizers and his embrace of a human presence in his performances. Whether playing monochord instruments, singing, or using electronics-kissed percussion, his music remains rooted in a cosmic African-American tradition. His soundscapes are as hypnotically beautiful as they are rich with moments of tension and dissonance, bringing depth to his trance-inducing explorations. For over four decades, Laraaji’s work has continued to evolve, inviting listeners into deep states of reflection while remaining grounded in a deeply personal musical journey. Event Horizon presents Christopher McNulty, Rose Actor – Engel (Apologist) and Dimension Step
Christopher McNulty is a multi-instrumentalist, designer and composer from Princeton, New Jersey. His arrangements, largely ambient, produce thematic soundscapes using field recordings, modular synthesizers, stringed instruments and found sound via improvisational and automatic techniques. He works mostly alone in a basement next to the washer and dryer and sometimes one cat.
Rose Actor-Engel (Apologist) is a Philadelphian musician and composer. She uses synthesizer, tape and field recordings to create ambient and experimental music, implementing specific rules and protocols to determine structure.
Dimension Step is the synth focused version of Dorety Brothers. It is much about moods, atmospheres, some noise and melodies too, deriving our sounds from standard synths, modular analog synths, digital piano and even some electronic percussion. Ambience to syncopation and arpeggiation, we tend to improvise within a loose framework of tempo, key, mode and time signature or maybe absence of time signature and tempo. The Event Horizon concert series features Electronic, Avant Garde, and Experimental music along with the work of live video, laser and analog projection artists. The concerts are always free and open to all. Admission is FREE

Jeffrey Werbock will present a program of instrumental solo improvisations based on traditional Azerbaijani mugham, played on oud - fretless wood face short neck lute; tar - fretted skin face long neck lute; and kamancha - skin face spike fiddle.Azerbaijani mugham is monophonic modal music, highly microtonal, meter free, densely ornamented, composed of complex melodic lines that are somewhat improvised according to the eastern tradition of theme and variation, and convey a mix of sorrow and joy, exhaltation and lament, and an overall sense of both antiquity and otherworldiness.Mr. Werbock has been giving presentations for well over three decades and has performed often at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Asia Society, World Music Institute, and presents lecture demonstrations at colleges and universities all over the English speaking world.
