Did it feel like things, as described today, aren't quite like the history you remember? Some call that Mandela Effect, the past recorded differently than you recall it in your memory. Well, we in the American Futurism department have another point of view to offer. Perhaps you, the other person, and all the people in the present were on different timelines. Perhaps the way you remember it, the way they remember it, and the way history remembers it were all accurate, and those multiple fractal and cyclical realities have converged to where we are... we are the point of convergence... Mandala Effect. On Saturday, September 7th, in Philadelphia at The Rotunda, two magical acts arrive at the same time... playing a set each of psychedelic, mind altering music. The Sacred Order Of Mystic Apogees ... S.O.M.A. , bring their ecstatic Kirtan music from Asbury Park, NJ. Be prepared for the cyclic rhythms and chants that build into a spiritual fervor. Following them is Urban Shaman Attack, the purveyors of American Futurism. Elliott Levin will be joining USA on saxophone, and will have a small spoken word set in between, where he will lay it down. These two bands will be stretching the sound out. Don't miss this FREE event. We do ask you to bring a canned food good, so we can make life easier for the hungry of Philadelphia. That said, man is not fed on bread and water alone.

The Secret Cinema presents ELECTION SEASON at The RotundaThursday, September 12, 20247:30 pmAdmission: FREEHas presidential election fatigue hit you yet? Tired of the divisiveness, endless commercials, mailings and campaign lies? Why not take a break by attending the next Secret Cinema screening -- featuring films about PAST presidential elections? On Thursday, September 12 we'll return to the Rotunda in University City to present ELECTION SEASON, featuring newsreels, documentaries and campaign films from past races to the White House. There will be one complete show at 7:30 pm (note earlier than usual start time). Admission is free.As usual, all Secret Cinema presentations are projected in 16mm film on a giant screen (not video, not digital, all analog!).This screening is part of the Rotunda's ongoing "Bright Bulb Screening Series," which offers free movies on the second Thursday of every month, throughout the year.A few highlights of ELECTION SEASON will be:THE ELECTION OF 1932 (1966) - This school film released for Social Studies classes by Encyclopædia Britannica Films featured selected scenes from an ABC-TV documentary called F.D.R. It consists almost entirely of fascinating newsreel clips documenting the transformational first election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as he defeated incumbent president Herbert Hoover in a landslide.WE THE PEOPLE (1940) - The Republican National Committee produced this campaign film (and at least three others) for candidate Wendell Wilkie, a moderate (and recently Democrat) businessman. As an opponent to F.D.R., Wilkie argued against New Deal spending and especially against Roosevelt's unprecedented third term, but it was a hopelessly uphill battle.ARMY-NAVY SCREEN MAGAZINE #45 (1944) - The ARMY-NAVY SCREEN MAGAZINE was a newsreel that was produced by the Army Signal Corps and shipped out bi-weekly to troops here and overseas, in hopes of boosting morale and explaining the war. This episode showed the presidential elections participated in by folks back home as well as by the soldiers themselves, thus underlining the difference between democracy and Hitler's fascism. Shown voting are "regular" Americans, from teachers and bakers to such movie stars as Lewis Stone and Bob Hope.PRIMARY (1960) - This short (53 minute) feature about the Wisconsin primary campaign for the Democratic nominee for president would transform the look of documentary film. The production team of Robert Drew (including cameramen Richard Leacock, D.A. Pennebaker and Albert Maysles) requested and received complete access from the leading candidates, John F. Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey. Using lighter, quieter and more flexible equipment that they'd developed independently -- shoulder-mounted cameras, wireless tape recorders -- they were able to follow the two men with an intimacy never before seen in documentary film, creating a "direct cinema" with a minimum of narration, and no "talking head" interviews. Never was the political process revealed so thoroughly, as the candidates move from television station interviews, party galas and small-town meetings with farmers, smiling and handshaking through it all. PRIMARY was rejected by all three television networks, but Robert Drew Associates was then contracted by ABC-TV to make a series of influential documentaries, before his talented team split off to make films like DON'T LOOK BACK and SALESMAN.Plus more!SECRET CINEMA WEBSITE: https://www.thesecretcinema.com

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC WORKSHOP AT 6PM. PERFORMANCE AT 8PM. Fire Museum Presents: Rancho AparteAbozaos, polkas, danzas, rebulú, Contradanzas, Jugas, and other indigenous sounds are the rhythms of Colombia's foremost Chirimia Brass Band from the Pacific Coast of Colombia's Choco department/province. The ensemble's high energy stage show is a favorite throughout Colombia and the world-over The group has excited audiences at the recent Petronio Alvarez Festival in Cali, Colombia and as far away as the WOMEX Festival in Budapest and FujiRock Festival in Japan. In the far west of Colombia, where the rainforests meet the Pacific, lies the Chocó department, a land set apart from the rest of the nation by the Andes mountains, creating a historic refuge for Afro-Colombians and Indigenous people seeking a safe haven. The region still boasts the largest Afro-Colombian and Afro-Indigenous population in the nation, with a unique musical culture heavily influenced by West African sounds. Though the region’s best-known musical export is champeta music, chirimía is the real mainstay. Brash and full of youthful energy, Rancho Aparte has emerged as one of the most exciting contemporary chirimía ensembles since the septet formed in 2005 in Quibdo, Chocó’s capital city.Chirimia is the swinging brass band sound that’s heard during carnival, saint’s day festivities, and civic celebrations in Chocó. Creolized descendants of the military bands first brought by the Spanish, these ensembles are centered around the chirimía, a kind of double-reed oboe or shwam that gives them their unique, skirling sound. Rancho Aparte draws its repertoire from a variety of traditional sources—abozaos, polkas, danzas, rebulú, contradanzas, jugas—yet another reflection of the region’s hybrid musical influences. If the instrumentation and some of the repertoire reflect European origins, the improvisation, call-and-response vocals, tempos, and tumbao (swing) have deep African roots.Rancho Aparte was founded by charismatic singer/composer Dino Manuelle, together with a group of musician friends, to take the chirimia sound beyond Chocó, bringing the music to national and international audiences. Today the group consists of Dino Manuelle (vocals), Dyam Palacios and Emer Davila (chimiria), Fredy Cañandas (euphonium), Rodian Rivas (percussion), Rodolfo Romaña (percussion), and Ronal Campaña (cymbals). The group takes its name from a local slang phrase, “hacer rancho aparte,” which roughly translates as “to set up on one’s own” —reflecting their desire to put their own stamp on this music while preserving and respecting its complicated legacy. Live, Rancho Aparte is a first-tier party band, drawing on not only traditional music, but also on all the music they grew up listening to, embracing the swagger and dynamism of salsa, hip hop, and reggaeton in an omnivorous sound they call “funky punk chirimía.”Rancho Aparte’s first success came in 2013, when they won Best Chirimia Band at the prestigious Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival. In 2015 the group toured Europe, and was invited to play the WOMEX festival in Budapest, Hungary. Just this spring Racho Aparte was one of the featured Colombian artists at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, where they performed a chirimia version of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” highlighting the similarities between their music and New Orleans’s own venerable brass band tradition.Rancho Aparte released their self-titled debut album in 2016 to critical acclaim, and followed up with their second record, Re-evolución in 2023. Produced by GRAMMY-winning Colombian producer Ivan Benavides, Re-evolución showcases Rancho Aparte’s commitment to bringing the music of Chocó to the wider world.venue is wheelchair accessibleThis engagement of Rancho Aparte is made possible in part through the Iber Exchange program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Ibermúsicas.
