An All-Ages Theatrical Music Extravaganza!+POPEYE (1980, directed by Robert Altman, 114 min., U.S.)- - - - -Yam On! Creator Steven Erdman (aka Lard Dog) is a cartoon character come-to-life who descends from planet Belopio on a Giant Pretzel to take your family on a musical journey of absurdism, frivolity, and unbridled joy. The utterly quirky cast of characters invites you into their unique audio-visual universe, complete with catchy songs, interactive props, multi-media graphics, and a pretzel toss—plus guest star appearance by famed puppeteer Richard Michael Gomez!Having performed on renowned stages around the globe, including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and the Strawberry Festival in China, Erdman has earned international acclaim for his extravagant, multi-media theatrical productions. Come play along and slurp the noodle of life, for Life’s A Real Dream."All about the power of imagination”
—THE NEW YORK TIMES
“Cloaks messages of love in absurdist pop songs”
—PASTE MAGAZINE- - - - -Robert Altman's audacious, one-of-a-kind movie musical/comic book film makes for a perfect compliment to Erdman's theatrical/musical vision.Director Altman, at the end of his run of bravura big studio productions (NASHVILLE, MASH, McCABE & MRS. MILLER), would go on location of the isle of Malta where Italian artisans would construct the weather-worn and fully-functional fishing village of Sweethaven as POPEYE's backdrop. The casting couldn't be more inspired, with BREAKING AWAY's Paul Dooley as the burger-loving Wimpy, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH's Ray Walston as crabby Poopdeck Pappy, and Robin Williams & Shelley Duvall, seemingly born to play the iconic characters of Popeye and his love Olive Oyl. Cult pop star Harry Nilsson's songs perfectly capture the mood of gleeful whimsy.A modest hit upon release, POPEYE's unique handmade charm has transcended generations, with fan Paul Thomas Anderson featuring the film's song “He Needs Me” in PUNCH DRUNK LOVE and Carly Rae Jepsen interpolating the same song into her 2019 hit “Everything He Needs.”“You wonder how on earth Altman did it; equally often, you feel you are watching a wacky masterpiece, the like of which you've never seen before.”- Geoff Andrew, Time Out- - - - -Follow Bright Bulb Screenings on Facebook, InstagramTHE ROTUNDAwww.therotunda.org

  • 5:00 PMIn-person! Philly Juneteenth Celebration Featuring: Dr. Leonard & Rosalind Jeffries

Philly Juneteenth Celebration Featuring: Dr. Leonard & Rosalind Jeffries5pm-9pm

A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Family Fun, Guest Speakers, Fashion & Talent Showcase Vendors,Food, EDUTAINMENT Hosted by: Bigga Dre "Amun Sen Hotep Re"

Over 60 years, first beginning as individuals and later in marriage, Dr. Rosalind and Leonard Jeffries have began their Great and Majestic Walk with African Peoples and our Great Culture. Their Walk has spanned more than 25 African Countries and Hundreds of African Leaders and at the same time they were instrumental in fusing the African American Experience with their African Continental Experience !

1865 people were not interested in immigration into the United States. In fact, the United States in the 1850's and 1860's had established a Know-Nothing Party; they did not want immigrants; they were against immigrants; and the immigrants that they were against were Papists, German and Irish Catholics. There was no prospect of bringing in immigrants from central, eastern, and southern Europe; these were the unwashed masses. Eighteen-sixty-five was our period. Eighteen-sixty-five was when half a million Black people, a quarter- million of them official Union army, navy troops-participated in the Civil War. The question of Black folks getting into their history, starting to fight for liberty and struggling for what is right is not the question of disuniting America. It has been our struggle that has kept America united. It has been our struggle that has raised anew the liberties that this nation professes. It has been our struggle that has created the 14th Amendment that became the amendment that the women could use and others could use, when they talk about the expansion of liberty in America.

  • 8:00 PMIn-person! Bowerbird presents a special screening of John Cage Meets Sun Ra: The Complete Concert
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Bowerbird is pleased to present a special screening of John Cage Meets Sun Ra: The Complete Concert at The Rotunda.

Recorded at Sideshows by the Seashore along the Coney Island boardwalk on June 8th, 1986 as documented by John Polizzi under the commission of event producers Rick Russo and Bronwyn Rucker.

From Pitchfork: “John Cage Meets Sun Ra: The Complete Concert gradually emerges as something greater than a footnote. That’s not because the pairing results in an ‘avant super duo.’ As it happens, the two artists tend to trade off soloing, and only play together audibly at one point during this hour-plus set, recorded at Coney Island. Yet despite the arms-length embrace, the overall concert has a surprisingly seamless quality.”

Admission is FREE/donations appreciated. RSVPs are not required but are appreciated. More info: https://www.bowerbird.org/event/screening-john-cage-meets-sun-ra/
